Q1: Is there any chance to upgrade my scholarship? If so, when can I apply for it?

A1: Around every January and July (before the new semester begins), there might be scholarship vacancy released and the M.E. Department Office will announce the relevant information accordingly via email to the eligible students to apply for it.

Eligibility:

  1. Scholarship released in Fall semester can only be applied by current students who were admitted in Fall semester; similarly, scholarship released in Spring semester can only be applied by current students who were admitted in Spring semester.
  2. Students who have met the abovementioned requirement MUST be recommended by his/her advisor in order to compete for this opportunity.

If there is no announcement made by the M.E. Department Office, meaning that there is no vacancy released for that semester.

 

Q2: When will my scholarship be issued to my account?

A2: The international students’ scholarship is supported from different sources as the table shown below. Normally, the amount of scholarship will be issued in the late of every month. Before reaching the M.E. Department Office for querying, it is suggested that you have your Taiwan Postal Savings Account Book updated first at the post office and check the details. If no update is shown, please then reach the M.E. Department Office for further inquiry.

Q3: When can I apply for my thesis defense examination? (applied to PhD students only)

Q4: What documents are required for applying for the thesis/dissertation defense examination?

Q5: What are the requirements for passing the Doctoral Candidate Qualifying Examination (QE)? How to apply for it? (applied to PhD students only)

A5: For passing the QE, it is required that the two major courses reach a letter grade A (or above) and one minor course reaches a letter grade A- (or above). Click here for the list of designated courses. Once the requirement has been met, please reach the M.E. department for the application form in hard copy. Please also note that all application will be collected altogether and submitted to the Section of Graduate Studies till the end of each semester (to have the data checked in). Therefore, the result of “Passing the QE” will be shown on your transcript in the next semester.

 

Q6: What does the new rule mean “Committee Members who are NOT currently appointed as: Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Academicians of Academia Sinica, current or former Research Fellow, Associate Research Fellow or Assistant Research Fellow of Academia Sinica, shall have their qualification validated by the Department 2 weeks ahead the dissertation defense application through filling the “Application form for Validation of the Committee Members” and submitting to Ms. Chia-Lin Hsueh at the Office of M.E. Dept.”

A6: As long as the examiners invited are from industrial field but NOT from the Academia, it is required the student to apply for the approval of the committee members’ qualification in advance. If the examiners invited are all from Academia, please simply disregard this rule.

 

Q7: How many copies of thesis (final draft) do I need to submit to the school upon leaving procedure? What is the format of the copies?

A7: Two copies of thesis are required upon applying for school-leaving procedure. One paperback copy (for both Master and PhD graduates) shall be submitted to the Office of Mechanical Engineering Department, which will be forwarded to the National Central Library. Please directly submit another copy (Ph.D. graduates shall submit hardback copy while Master graduates shall submit paperback copy only) to the NTUST Library.

 

Q8: What color should I prepare for the thesis (final draft) cover?

A8: Please confirm the color of the cover with the Department Office before having your final thesis printed out as different color represents different academic year.

 

Q9: When can I apply for my thesis defense examination? (Applied to MS students only)

Q10: I have finalized my thesis defense and processed the leaving school procedure, but why my thesis credits are not shown on my final academic transcript?

A10: In accordance with the General Academic Regulations of NTUST, required numbers of credits do not include the credits for writing the thesis. Therefore, it is normal that relevant information is not shown on your academic transcript.

 

Q11: How is the short-term intensive course different from the normal semester course in terms of the dropping-and-adding procedure?

A11: The rules governing dropping-and-adding of the short-term intensive course are DIFFERENT from normal semester course. The M.E. Office will announce the short-term course once it’s available on the system and please select it through the link provided. Should one wish to drop out the short-course he/she MUST inform Ms. Sun at the ME dept. office in advance BEFORE the first session has started. Please note that Students are not allowed to apply for withdrawal for this short-term course IF the course has already started for 2 hours. Should one wish to drop off this course MUST INFORM Ms. Sun BEFORE the first session started. If the students do not show up in the first session and not withdraw it with Ms. Sun before the course started, either, the students will be considered as absent and might be failed.

Q12: I have completed my Master degree in M.E. department, NTUST, and about to pursue a PhD degree in the same dept. Within the credits that I completed in my MS program, there are 3 subjects (total 9 credits) happened to be my Qualification Examination (QE) Courses in PhD program. In this scenario, can these 9 credits be waived as my QE courses in PhD program?

A12: Yes, subjects taken in your MS program that happened to be your PhD QE courses and also reached the criteria (meaning that the subject has reached the required score standard) can be waived in your PhD program. If the course you have taken during your MS program didn’t reach the score criteria for PhD QE course, please apply for “retaking” the subject with the Dept. Office before/during the course add/drop period by filling up a form (Please either reach the office in person for the form or through email request @ sunyinghwan@mail.ntust.edu.tw).

Q13: Followed by the above-mentioned scenario, can these 9 credits be waived as the “compulsory 18 credits” that a PhD student is required to complete during the PhD program?

A13: No. MS credits cannot be waived as partial of the compulsory 18 credits in PhD program. One shall complete the required credits in PhD program as stated in the rules and regulations.
